CHAPTER EIGHT

BENJI

I play with my rings, waiting for Mason to come out of his house. My stomach is tying itself into knots. My inner alpha has decided this is a date.

We’re just doing a little Christmas shopping. We’re literally going to the mall we both work at. If this was truly a date, I would be wooing Mason. I would take him somewhere special, dazzle him, and then take him home in a way where he wouldn’t be able to question whether this was a date or not. By the end of it, he would be sated, happy, and asking for another date.

The agenda tonight is simply Christmas shopping, nothing more.

So why the fuck is my heart racing against my ribs, dreaming of holding Mason’s hand? I’m not a teenager by any means but Mason reminds me of young love. It’s innocent and sweet. It’s simple. I like him. I want to spend more time with him. I want to know everything about him.

I want to invite him to a proper date.

Just then, Mason steps over to my jeep, pulling the door open and ducking inside. His hair is a mess of curls and his cheeks are pink from the cold outside. He pulls his jacket tight around himself, shaking the snow from his curls. The sight quite literally makes my heart stutter.

“Thanks again for picking me up,” Mason says as he slides his seatbelt into place. “A proper gentleman.”

I make an amused noise at the back of my throat, putting my jeep into drive and heading towards the mall. We’re starting early this morning so hopefully we will miss some of the rush.

“I’ve been called a lot of things but I think this is the first time I’ve been called that.”

“What other names have people called you?”

I look over at Mason, finding him staring at me. I swallow, composing myself. “Benji,” I say at first, warming when Mason giggles. “There’s also been Mister, Reindeer Man, Big B. That one was from when I was little. My brothers called me that. And then there are the more fun names such as Sir, Daddy, one boy even called me Master though I don’t like that title quite as much.”

I peek over at Mason, finding him worrying his bottom lip between his teeth, his cheeks deliciously red. There’s a moment of quiet in the car as he seems to process this information before he’s giving me a little smile. “All excellent names if you ask me. They seem umm, very fitting. Very you.”

“Maybe not Reindeer Man,” I tell him.

Mason giggles again. “Okay, maybe not that one. But the rest are good.”

“Yes. Yes, they are,” I say carefully. I want him to see that the name he called me is one I’m okay with. He might have been the first person to ever use that name but I would be lying if I said I didn’t crave hearing it fall from his lips again.

Mason’s awakened something inside of me. He’s somehow so sunshiny that he’s melted my icy heart.
